Hi ladies
Two days ago I found a small lump in one of my breast which I managed to clear with hot showers and massage, but by that afternoon I had a fever and my nipple was incredibly painful and dark pink in colour instead of the usual brown. Baby is 8 weeks old and this breast has always been a bit painful since the start and has had a small sore on it from day dot. The nipple is not soft like the other one and when Xavier sucks it feels like he is repeatedly clamping down on a hard lump. I have been expressing from the bad breast and feeding on the other but now have large red marks radiating from the painful nipple. Even expressing is painful and I can't seem to get much out, only about 30 ml in 30 minutes. It still feels full but is too painful to carry on expressing after this time. Fever is gone though. So do you think nipple thrush or mastitis or maybe a combination? TIA Kel |

The redness would indicate mastitis but it could be both - i had both. You probably need to get to a dr asap.

I don't think a fever would accompany thrush. If I were you I would go to the doctor.
Fingers crossed it isn't mastitis! |

definatly sounds like mastitis.
See your Dr as you may need some antibiotics to clear it up but Like relleh said it could be both as well. If the thrush is there is will stay until you treat you and bubs. Good luck I had both at different times but there is nothing worse. Cheers Susan |

Certainly sounds like mastitis or at least a blocked milk duct. Thrush is more a super sensitive nipple that stings/burns feels like needles shooting up the breast when feeding, also itchy nipple that has a trade mark white area on the nipple when baby has been drinking.
Try and hand express the sore side concertrating on finding the blocked duct and sqeezing the milk out. I find that I have a blocked duct and have to force the milk out because it literally is blocked in there and has a hard kind of old milk plug blocking it in, that is why I get no relief when feeding or expressing normally. Definately see your GP because a temp definately indicates infection!! good luck with it all... |
