I don't mean "for" the parents but about the sex ed the school is providing for the children in year 7.
There's an info/discussion next week and I've ticked that I'l attend, so I'm wondering what I should consider.
I imagine they outsource their sex ed - so I'll ask who does it and if they have religious affiliations (it's a state school) and I'll ask if they touch on STDs and homosexuality and what their attitude is.

What else would you bring up or expect them to include?

I don't know if it should be touched here or in follo-up classes but I think sex ed should come with a "masterbation isn't evil" component.

NB: I saw a fantastic Embarrassing Bodies last night. I think girls and boys should learn more about their own bits seperately. The parts, the names and normal 'conditions' such as thrush.

Do people really think it is still? Other than loony religious cults?
Is it evil for girls too?

I would want them to cover the whole shebang-

STDs
Pregnancy
Contraceptives (all kinds)
Abortion

Contrary to common assumption we were taught all the above at Catholic Girls Highschool (late 1980's). It was not moralising grandstanding but factual information.

ETA: PP mentioned Masterbation - I would also want all kinds of sexual acts discussed. It is amazing the number of kids who don't view felatio as a sexual act.

There's still a lot of shame attached. It's still a 'not talked about' subject.

I think this is especially true for teenage girls. Boys brag a bit about it wink.gif

Ditto what isolobella said about girls not believing giving head is a sex act.

I would also want girls being taught about selfrespect and that they don't have to "do it" to make boys like them or to keep up with other girls.

Reproductive health and fertility lifespan. Emphasis on what STD's can do to the reproductive system and how they can decrease fertility in the long run. I'd be keen to ask if they cover any of this stuff, as well as the general material.
