I have a strip of soil about 50cm from the side of the pool. It's about 8 metres long and about 50cm wide. DH wants to grow a row of gardenias there or gardenias alternated with another plant.
I'm not convinced about gardenias. I used to have one in a pot and it always got woody and yellow (ok, I was pretty hopeless about looking after it).
I always think they are high maintenance plants and I want something that is going to require very little maintenance, is evergreen and doesn't drop too many leaves/petals.
What does everyone think?

We have agapanthus and photyinia on one side of the pool and a row of lavender bushes on another side of the pool.

Gardenias are one of my absolute fav flowers. They smell so lovely! We had a hedge of gardenias at my parents house.. it didn't require any looking after, but we lived in the tropics. Not sure what is best growing conditions.

Love Kristi

oohhhh... gardenias rival roses as my favourite garden scent! They prefer acid soils, but other than that, I find them to be very low maintenance plants.

Very allergic to them! They look pretty but give me sinus.

Thanks for the replies, I think I will be doing alternate bushes of gardenias and either mini agapanthus or bearded lilies in between. I really want something that provides some nice green foliage along the fence and is low maintenance.
