Anyone gone from hypothyroidism is hyperthyroidism?

For the last few years I've been treated for hypothyroidism, taking thyroxine. It's been pretty stable except going a little haywire during pregnancy.

I mentioned to my gp at my sons 8 week needles that I'd been feeling tired, dizzy, lack of appetite etc, so he sent me for some blood tests.

He just rang to say my thyroid is extremely OVER active, so hyperthyroidism. I'm going to see him on Friday.

Just wondering what your experiences were? Did it stay over active, or go back to under active? What treatment did you have? He mentioned medication (what sort?), surgery, or radiation therapy.

Anything I should ask? What were your symptoms?

My endo is on holidays, that's why the gp is doing the testing.

Thanks a lot!

Are you still taking thyroxine? If you are, he will probably just decrease your levels back down.

If your dosage was increased during pregnancy, now that you are no longer pregnant you won't need as much medication, so will have to adjust your dosage accordingly.

Its not that scary, you will just need to adjust dosage and get back down to normal. Happened to me too post DD's birth. original.gif

I would not think you would need medication to bring the hormones back down unless it was dangerously high... same with surgery or radiation.

My thyroid has gone from Hyperactive post DS's birth, uncontrollable with medication, surgery to remove a high-functioning nodule and the left side of my thyroid, to HYPOactive post surgery due to the right side of my thyroid not functioning at all, so medicated with thyroxine to bring it back up to normal, dosage increased during pregnancy with DD, hyperactive postnatal, medication adjusted back down and now back to normal original.gif

I have had similar to Lil'Cat with both my pregnancies. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (over active thyroid) at 14 was treated with medication alone. Thyroid went into remission for about one year then it packed it in and I have been on thyroxine for 17 years.

With both my pregnancies my thyroxine level has had to be increased (150 to 300ug the first). This is very common also have had a friend with the same. My Endocrinologist has always got me to then drop back to my pre-pregnancy level by around the post 6 week mark with follow up blood tests 6 weeks after reducing to ensure that my levels are fine.

If you are concerned get your GP to send you to a Endocrinologist.

Thanks for the replies ladies! Guess I'll just see what my levels are and what my gp says.

I'm not currently taking any thyroxine as my levels became ok at the end of pregnancy, so haven't taken any for approx 4 months. In my first pregnancy they went haywire and my meds were adjusted pretty much every 6 weeks.

I do have an endo but she's away, might ask for a referal to someone else in the mean time.

Thanks again!

So I saw my doctor and the pathology report said I had severe hyperthyroidism
T4 42.0
TSH undetectable <0.03
t3 20.5

My endocrinologist called my gp from o/s while I was there!

I went and had an u/s, couldn't have a nuclear scan due to breastfeeding.

Just wondering if either of you were treated whilst breastfeedig? GP and endo advised against meds due to b/f (ptu or something?) and radioactive iodine is out too.

We're doing two weeks of monitoring to see if my levels stabilise, then re assess.

No I have not had treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding other than taking thyroxine. They have only ever adjusted my dosage.

I know when they change my dosage it normally takes 6 weeks to change.

Good luck with it OP I hope your levels reduce.

My first baby was about 9 months old when I was diagnosed with Graves disease after going to the doctor complaining about tiredness. I had to go on PTU as I was breastfeeding. After my TSH levels improved (although still in the abnormal range and still on PTU) and the endocronologist said it would be ok for me to TTC. I fell pregnant within the first 2 cycles. My TSH continued to improve and I stopped medication when 3months pregnant. TSH has been normal ever since (about 2.5 years).

Thanks for the replies! I'm still in limbo land, seeing the endo on the 22nd.

It's interesting the different opinions, gp and endo have said I can't take ptu while breastfeeding as it can affect the baby, and definately not if pregnant as it's a class d drug! Who knows! I told the gp I wasn't willing to wean my son (he's only 10 weeks old).

I'm hoping it's a post partum hormonal thing and will settle down on it's own.

Bloods on Friday t4 51 tsh <0.01 and t3 30, I also saw the u/s report, couldnt understand it, but it said everything pointed towards Graves disease.

How much weight did you guys lose? My ob rang me today (hes lovely!) to check on me and said I'd lost too much, 22kg in 10 weeks, 4kg in he last 9 days.

I feel like I could sleep forever but struggle to get to sleep! Like now.

I was on PTU for both pregnancies and while breastfeeding both my kids. I was told by my OB and Endo that it was the preferred medication for pregnancy (compared with neo mercazole) and it was fine to take. If you are worried, and you are in Melbourne, I found the Royal Women's Hospital Pharmacy advice line really helpful as they have the most up to date information about medications.

Thanks for that iMac, I am in Melbourne so will definately give them a call. The GP looked it up on his mims and it said no for breastfeeding, so maybe it wasn't the latest version? Who knows!
