As I understood it, before recent legislation, prostitution as a business transaction between a woman and her client was not illegal but women could be charged with soliciting and pimps with living of the immoral earnings of a woman. A person could also be charged with running a bawdy house or allowing their premises to be used as a brothel.
Brothels are now legal but regulated. Unregulated ones are still illegal. Soliciting on the streets is still illegal but advertising in the papers isn't. You can use your own home provided no more than 2 sex workers are involved. In this case it is not considered to be a brothel.

QUOTE (55sunny55 @ 02/10/2010, 08:58 PM) That area used to be awful for kerb crawlers, they'd follow anyone who looked vaguely female...I would be walking my dog and they'd proposition me. Yep, cos I'm working, with my dog. But he's extra! LOL! I used to get kerb crawlers following me on William St in Sydney while I was waiting for a bus/taxi home from a friend's house nearby. The funny thing is that it would have been no use because South Sydney Council instituted a no-left-turn into the next residential street due to kerb crawlers using that street as a pick up. It always used to make me laugh because I was always fully dressed, albeit in knee-high boots and a belted fake fur coat while the local prostitutes were in lingerie, so I always felt like saying "Don't you realise I have a few too many clothes to be the person you're after?"

QUOTE However, the one that people often don't think about is if it is legalised, and they advertise a position and you are on Centrelink and looking ofr employment, you may be required to apply for that position/job. Nope, not true. You don't have to apply for work that you object to on moral grounds, say for example a receptionist in a brothel, or a sex worker. In the same way as you can be forced to apply to joing the armed forces. Nice try with the scare tactics though.

I used to mosey to the shop in a flanny, grungy jeans and thongs. St Kilda gutter crawlers are far less discerning! House prices in my old stomping grounds have gone through the roof though, so I wonder if the street walkers have been moved on to other areas.
