Is there any mattress topper that you can recommend that can make an uncomfortable mattress heaps comfy or will I just need to buy a brand new mattress?

It won't make it heaps comfy, but might tide you over until you can get a new one. Clark rubber have them, as do Myer (I think) and there's some on Ebay. I can't recommend one, I never got past the searching stage but I think it's something you'd need to check out anyway.

I got a piece of foam from clark rubber cut to size for my ds cot only as a topper to his matress as I could feel the springs. They have 3 thicknesses of foam u can use but I'm not sure I'd put one on our bed I'd buy a new matress

I'm not a bad mum, I'm a good mum with low expectations
If you mattress is essentially ok but just a bit uncomfortable because their isn't much padding over the springs then a thick mattress topper from Clark's might solve the issue(essentially that's all a pillow top is really anyway). However if the springs are dying and uneven you might struggle.

Homeart have nice ones. They are sort of like a pillow topper.
