If you just set it to auto everything will be as easy as using a compact! But the images WILL be better. And rest assured - most people seldom manually set exposures.
And it's a great way to 'cheat' a bit too - take your picture on auto setting and check the exposure / aperture reading - then you can play a little with adjustments.
The Cannon "world of Eos" site has some great video tutorials - regardless of which brand you bought. And it's well worth buying a few magazines on digital photography for some inspiration.
But let us know which camera, and which lenses!

Pentaxian!
Congratulations - set your camera to Program mode and start shooting!!

A great book to look at at some stage is "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. It really explains the exposure triangle well when you want to take the next step. And one of my most treasured photos is taken on full auto the first day I got my dslr and it is still one of my best!!

This is the camera I bought for my first dslr as well and it is brilliant. Very user friendly, easy to navigate, a perfect first timers camera.

Have fun!
