I'm starting to plan DS's 1st birthday party, and wanted to see if people served alcohol? We're doing a lunchtime thing - cold meats, salads, party food etc. There'll be 40-50 adults. Unsure if alcohol is the done thing, and if so if we provide it or just say BYO? I'm leaning towards having a couple of bottles of wine (because I have some anyway) and some light beers, but having never been to a 1st birthday party I don't know if that's weird or not

Don't see why not. We are going to one this weekend and there will definitely be alcohol there. We will also be having it at our DS's first birthday later this year. We'd be a little shocked if there wasn't!!

I think it's pretty normal to provide it. We had beer, red and white wine, and champagne, as well as soft drinks.

Enjoy!! original.gif

I think that it is not weird at all. BYO on the invitation would be fine as would providing a little. I think 1st Birthdays are very much a celebrartion for the parents original.gif

Having been to a couple of 1st Birthdays, adults drinking and socialising was the case.

I will be having BYO on the invitation for our DS's, I think, though I am a little reluctanat as I would like to provide all. DH would like us to have it as BYO...

We had no alcohol at DS's first birthday. It was a party of about 40 adults, 15 or so kids at 12:00pm.

I'd say wine/champers/beer or whatever you serve would be a nice touch! don't see anything wrong with having alcohol there, I doubt anyone would be out to get w*n*ered at a 1st birthday. have fun!

We've never served alcohol at any children's parties until the birthday person is an adult themselves. I don't see why you would serve alcohol especially if it's a lunchtime party.

It wouldn't even occur to me to have anything other than coffee, tea, milk and soft drink at a party for a 1 year old. It's a lunchtime affair, the children don't need alcohol to have a great time. If you think the adults are unable to enjoy themselves at a children's 1st party without it, make it BYO.

Edited to add - Oh, and water.

We don't serve alcohol at children's parties and neither do any of our friends/family, I don't see the point.

For DD's 1st birthday we had milk & cookies themed birthday with various flavours of milk (along with non alcoholic punch and water) and the adults just drank that along with the children.
