We are traveling to Tasmania in January for a month long Holiday and was just wondering if any one new of any good attractions or sights to see that are not really listed in all the travel brochures
For example any small breweries ,wineries ,fruit farm or other small producer kind of ventures
And is there any kind of fish farm where we can take the kids fishingand that has a variety of fish not just trout
Any hint ,tips or informatiom would be greatly appriciated
Cheers

Well it seems like its not a very popular place to visit and i thought at least the people that live there would promote their state

You asked for places that only a local could know about, not where those of us who've travelled as tourists there might know. Perhaps you should have tried posting in the Tasmania section itself?

I've only been to the places mentioned in travel brochures and books, however I can say they were all wonderful experiences. shrug.gif

You could ask locals when you are there. Depending how structured you want your trip to be.

I live in north west Tassie and there are so many fantastic places around here: the Mole Creek caves, the antique shops in Oatlands, Cradle Mountain and playing in the snow, swimming and camping at Lake Barrington, there are so many wonderful things to see.

I don't really know what is listed in the brochures since I've been visiting Tasmania all my life to see family.

Things I've enjoyed though (food related):

Pyengana cheese shop and the pig at the Pyengana Hotel

Christmas hills raspberry farm

Moobrew brewery in Berriedale (Hobart)

Grandvewe cheesery in Birchs Bay

House of Anvers chocolate shop/factory in Latrobe

Other:

Hastings caves and hot springs

walk to southern most point

Freycinet, walk to Wineglass bay

Cradle Mountain walks

Bruny island (there's a berry farm there as well I think)

Tassy is gorgeous. I keep trying to convince DP to move there but he hates the cold so never going to happen. Not sure what they have for kids etc as we've gone there twice on our own but it's just beautiful and the people are so friendly.

Undomesticmother, all the things you and Librablonde mentioned I (as a tourist) know about from reading through brochures and travel books. The OP seems to be searching out for more obscure, less well known places. I think most of these kind of places in Tassie are publicized, it's just not that large an island! Berating us here in the travel section for not helping with suggestions that only a local could possibly know about seems kind of unfair to me.

I know - I never said they were out of the way. As I said I've never read a travel brochure for the place though...
