Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice? DS nearly 4 who has previously had no allergic reactions to anything, might have had a reaction to tree nuts. First time: ate brownies containing walnuts. Complained of a sore throat immediately after eating. 2nd time: ate macadamias, sore/hurting throat, 3rd time, 2 days ago, 1 macadamia, same reaction. The sore throat lasts for maybe 10mins.
We now have a referral to see a specialist and GP has said avoid all nuts. So what do you think? Is this how allergies start? Will he end up with anaphylaxis? Or do some allergies remain mild? Totally out of my depth here and kind of freaking out!! Thanks This post has been edited by mama-strat: 10/08/2012, 06:44 PM |

My son has a tree nut allergy and we first noticed it when he was 15months old and we gave him ice-cream with praline in it. He began to cough and had little red welts around his mouth.
Did you son have any swelling of the lips or tongue? My son ate a biscuit last year with pecans in it and after one bite he stopped eating it and his lips swelled up, he complains of a itchy tongue etc. When your son had the sore throat, did you notice if his tongue was swollen? Did he seem to have trouble breathing? I think if he can eat a whole macadamia nut and not have a major reaction, he is possibly sensitive to nuts, but not anaphylactic, although if the reaction is getting more severe each time he may be ana? I agree with your GP to avoid all tree nuts in the meantime and they'll do a skin prick test wihen you see the allergist. Meanwhile keep claratyne nearby. Tree nuts are easy to avoid I have found, they are mainly in desserts and biscuits, we just check all packets to be on the safe side. Good luck with it. |
