hi
ds almost 4 cannot pedal a tricycle. Tried him on a couple of diff tricycles and just doesnt have the leg strength to push. He knows how to ride a balance bike but this is getting too small for him. Can anyone recommend an easy two wheeled bike that looks to be easy to pedal I know its hard to tell. i think he has poor muscle tone which may be associated to sensory issues he has. Anyone's OT recommended any brands. Looking at a 16inch 40cm size. thks This post has been edited by bloodorange: 21/08/2012, 12:14 AM |

Hi there,
Our little one is 3 1/2 and has low muscle tone, poor motor planning due to his mild form of autism. He couldnt ride a trike, scooter or any bike we tried in the store. My husband found a brand called ByK which is made of light weight materials and is ergonomicly designed. I was thinking it would take up to a year for him to learn given how behind he is physically. We couldn't believe it because he could ride it straight away!! It's quite amazing as really there was no way in the world I would have ever imagined he could ride a bike. It's also very cool looking. It's a bit pricey. I think we paid $275 for it but i think it was worth it. Better than spending $100 on one to side in the garage untouched. Best of luck |

My DS has low muscle tone. We found that he did much better on a lighter bike than one of the cheapie steel ones, which tend to be very heavy.
We also found him better on a scooter first too. THis seemed to help his balance much more (although the balance bike might have already done that?) Definitely look on Gumtree or the like for a second hand expensive bike, rather than a new cheaper one, if that was the way you were heading. |

Have you been into an actual bike store. I find their bikes are much better than kmart, big w ect. They are lighter and better made and therefore easier to use.
The cost a little more but I am a convert now |

From my kids experience, its harder to pedal a trike, as the wheels are positioned at the front, where on a bike, its in the middle. My kids never mastered the trike, got it first go on an actual bike.

thanks everyone really great advice.
We were looking at the pricier ones online. Mongoose, xds. etc. So will look at Byk. Who would have thought that those innocent looking trikes are not so kid friendly. thks again |
