My DH has been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. We were a little surprised as he exhibits none of the telltale daytime symptoms such as napping and lack of concentration. However, he can be a bit of a sloth outside work so hopefull treatment will help increase his energy levels.
Due to a severely broken nose in childhood, he will probably need the full-face mask system. If you or someone you know has been treated for sleep apnea, could you elaborate on your experiences in regards to the following:- 1. DH is overweight which is mainly self-inflicted. However, I understand that sleep apnea can mess with your metabolism and make you crave junk food, making weight loss difficult. Does using a CPAP machine help with weight loss? 2. How long does it take to get used to the CPAP machine? 3. Does the CPAP machine help reduce snoring (I hope this is a big yes!) Cheers! |

1. Not that I have personally seen.
2. It's not that comfortable but you get used to it (observation only) 3. No snoring, which is heaven, but it does sound like Darth Vader is in the room.(not that worrying) |

1. Makes you more energetic, which, for your DH could mean the ability to move more, then lose weight? 2. Not long. Less than a week.3. As per PP, darth moves in:)
Most places will fit you for the mask etc as well, so this helps with the settling procedure |

Agree with the above. And to add to Willow Angel's but about masks - there's many types and the place where he goes for monitoring/assessment/sleep study will have a range that he can choose from.
It is bliss. What I've noticed though is that if DH is using the mask most nights then even if he skips one night, he snores less |

Is it possible to get the broken nose fixed first?
That might help the problem even more. |

In my case nope, the benefit fot me was waking up without a splitting headache. 2. Took about 2 weeks, I now find it hard to go to sleep without the mask because of the association, the mask going on is a sleep trigger. 3. Yes, I basically don't snore when using it, unless I have a cold. With my machine the sound is pretty similar to having a fan or aircon running, so really easy to ignore. |
