How long should my 6yo DD be waiting for an X-ray of a broken arm in a major Melbourne metro hospital? We have been here 1 hour already, still waiting.

As long as it takes I would say. It's unfortunate, but you just have to wait your turn. Hope she will be ok and that she's got some good pain relief on board if it is something she has just done.

Will depend whether they have had to fit in any emergency X-rays or whether they've been called to the ward or ER to do a portable.
I have been kept longer in the private system

Sounds like you haven't been waiting too long yet. Unfortunately, suspected simple fractures aren't that high on the triage table. I think anything up to about 4 hours is good.

If it's really busy then waiting a few hours would be normal I think.
I hope she is ok and you didn't have to wait too long.

Hope your DD has been offered pain relief. Settle in for a wait, she's probably triaged at a 3 or 4. (Non life threatening) and can be bumped down the list as more urgent cases present. If your daughter's condition worsens or her pain becomes out of control please chat to the triage nurse again.

Hope she gets seen soon. I always try and remember that when we're triaged as a 3 or 4, I'm thankful *not* to be a 1 or 2. We've had those and the terror and panic that they bring along with the whirlwind of doctors and nursing staff around us is awful.

sit back and relax - its going to be a long wait!!

mid week, i would expect to wait a couple of hours, if its just an "uncomplicated"break

Couple of hours id say. I had dd in on a quiet sunday morning for a foot x ray and it took 3 hours.

Its low priority in their scale.

Hmm. I'd say a few more hours yet. DD broke her arm this year after school. By the time we got into ER it was 5:30, actually saw a Dr about 6:30, then had to wait for x-rays. X-ray dept was on skeleton staff after 6pm, so we had to wait for pnuemonia (sp) scans, pregnancy issues etc. whatever was labelled more of an emergency than DD.

In the end we got the x-ray at 9:30, was half casted and out the door by 10:15. Was a long night.....

Thanks everyone. DD has a confirmed broken arm

She jammed the top arm bone and broke off a couple of chips from the bottom of the bone. She has a half-cast for a week then another X-ray to check whether the chips need to be pinned.

She was so brave, telling me everything was going to be ok. I was a blubbering mess, after too many hospital visits this year.

Lovely nurses and hospital staff, we are so lucky.
