DD1 had her allergy test today. It has been 2.5 yrs since her last one.
The good news is that she is no longer allergic to macadamia nuts. The not so good news is that she is still ana to cashews and allergic to pistachio's. However the severity of the reaction has reduced since last time. The cashew reaction 2.5 yrs ago was 19mm this time it was only 7mm. So still requiring an epi-pen. The dr is hopeful that she may be in that 20% bracket of children that outgrow their nut allergies. She will go back towards the end of next year for another test before the dr retires. In the mean time, it is business as usual in avoiding cashews and pistachio's. |

a decreased size in SPT does not necessarily mean that the reaction is less severe, someone with an SPT of 8mm can still be as allergic as someone with a 24mm SPT. The SPT just shows that she is still sensitised- it does not predict the reaction.
Cashews and pistachios are from the same family so if you allergic to one you are usually allergic to the other. The only definitive way to show you are not allergic to something you were once allergic or sensitized to is to have a food challenge to it. My DD last year had an 8mm SPT to peanut this year it is back up to 12mm after slowly coming down from about 20mm to start with- no less allergic though! |
