we have a couple ideas for the kids Christmas presents. the presents vary greatly in price, do you think it matters if it is what each child would like, or do you try and give presents of equal value?

If I get my way DS1 will be getting $379 pressie and DD will be getting a $100 pressie.. DS2 will probably score a $150 pressie.

We give what they want and need. I don't believe in balancing the financial books when it comes to kids.

Normally I ask the kids for a list of what they want and buy that plus anything else I see - it usually varies in amounts- tend to work out that the older ones get more spent on them as they want electronic things etc BUT this year due to finances I am not asking them for lists, I am buying surprises and only to a set amount so they will all have the exact same amount spent this year.

I get the kids what I think they would like (within reason).
I do try to get equal number of presents but do not worry about the cost equalling out. |

I buy for neices and nephews the same amount. I will do the same for our kids if we have more then one. If I set out a limit say of $300 each and one gets a present of $250 they will get something small, another may get lots of things that equal $300. This is how my parents did it and I think it is fair. I remember one year though my sister got a dirt bike I got a GPS and a step sister got a laptop. I can tell you I felt a bit ripped off that year.

I am adept at balancing the dollar value and the quantity. It helps that I often buy my kids the same things as they have very similar tastes.

I think in terms of equal number rather than amount. I' ve noticed that kids don't give a crap about how much, but if one kid's got more gifts than the other, look out!

As someone who grew up jealous of her brother getting a greater number pf presents under the tree both number & value will be matched in our household when we have another
I remember when I worked at Big W a lot of parents would come in and buy gifts with ziplock bags with kids names written on them, that way they spent the exact same amount on each child |
