I'd like to get a tethering stake for when we take the dogs camping. We used to tie the dogs to our vehicle for those times when 2 free hands make things so much easier however our current car has no where suitable.
I bought a screw in the ground stake but when I checked to weight rating online it's only 23kg. Together my dogs weigh 70+kg and I'd prefer to tie them to the same spot. Also I need to be able to put the spike in and out of the ground at each camping spot.
The dogs both wait patiently and wont be tugging at the restraint but I do need to be confident that it wont give way in case a kangaroo bounds too close and they get excited. I do practice 'see wildlife *sit*' with them.
I'm not worried about anti tangling devices as the dogs are never left unsupervised while tied up. If I can't find anything suitable I'll just continue with holding the leads myself original.gif

Do you have big dogs that you temporarily tether? If so what do you use?

I use the tow ball on the car, if you can't find something suitable have a peek under the front of the car there should be a hook type thing they use for towing.

I have stakes that have a long piece on the top that bangs it in to the ground (without needing a mallet). Hard to explain, but a lot of dog people use them for tethering dogs at dog trials and at training. The stake is really long so it goes a fair way in to the ground. Generally they aren't really worth the cost for people to make them so they aren't generally sold in stores, but every so often someone's DH makes a stack whenever people start asking around for them and sells them through the dog clubs.

Hard to explain, but if you let me know what state you are in, I can ask if there is any clubs there supplying them at the moment?

I used to use the tow ball on the car until my naughty girl learnt how to unhook herself by using her teeth, and took herself for a walk around the caravan park we were staying in. Fortunately she didn't go far and came when I called her but I nearly had heart failure when I went out after leaving them for a minute to make coffee to find just one dog sitting there.
I've since bought a c-crates secura pen which is big enough for both of them to stand up in, stretch out and move around. I use tent pegs to secure it to the ground.

Thank you for all the suggestions, it is helpful to see all the ways people keep their dogs secure while out on adventures.
After reading here and watching too many youtube vids I've decided to modify the screw tether I've already got and use shackles or screw carabina on it instead of the weak looking attachments it currently has. I'll trial it at home before next trip away.

We used to set up the dogs crate in the back of the van which was so handy but no van anymore sadly. I think buying another van just so the dogs can have their own comfy beds away from home might be a little on the over indulgent side roll2.gif
They don't seem to mind sleeping in bed with us.
