Just got myself an iphone 4s and am a bit nervous about damage from dropping it etc, so I was looking for a good protective case.

DH has the Griffin survivor which is really good but it is very bulky. Is there any others out there that offer good protection but aren't quite as bulky? (It won't need to survive a 23 story fall or anything which seems to be a good selling point for some models! LOL)

Just wondering what others have and the pros & cons.

The bulky ones will always give better protection. I have a two piece one I got from Ebay... The inner is rubbery (silicone probably) with a harder plastic casing. It's a little on the bulky side, and the colours are very Ben-10, but otherwise it's good. The harder plastic outer seems to mitigate against the inevitable silicone stretching.
Get a good film to protect the screen too.

I use one of the leather flip wallet covers from Ebay on my Samsung s2. The protect the phone well enough that I had to buy a new one thanks to my old case disintegrating on me.
That cover has protected my phone from multiple falls off the verandah railing in our highset Queenslander, a fall from a third floor holiday apartment and my 19 month old DD's attempt at 'washing' the phone. Plus you can pop your bank cards and license in the slots and leave the wallet at home. There are some made for the Iphone that have coin pockets in them as well.

Absolutely definitely get an Otterbox!

My DH has the Defender, which you could throw off a building and not smash your phone, but I find it too bulky. I have the Commuter, which I love. I have dropped it several times (on bitumen, even) and it's been fine.

DH is very hard on phone cases, and managed to destroy an Otterbox in less than six months. More usual users may have a better experience. He's now got a Lifeproof case, which he so far likes much better. It's much less bulky than the Otterbox and the case is less rubbery so it is easier to get in/out of pockets & purses. I found it at one of those kiosks in the aisle of a shopping center, but you can also get them online. I'm much less hard on my phones, and have been fine with a Candyshell.

Damn! I was very happy with my Otterbox until I read this and looked up Lifeproof. Now I want one! Waterproof? Awesome.

I LOVE the lifeproof case!!!
DH and i have them and i cant recommend them highly enough.
Ive dropped mine a dozen times and it just bounces.

DH had the otterbox and changed to the lifeproof and he says its 10xs better

We all have an otterbox each (incl the kids). They are great. The day I put it on my iPhone, it fell down the back of the couch onto tiles, and survived.

I have a speck candyshell.. DS dropped my phone and it landed corner first onto a brick floor and no damage at all..
