I gave a couple of Panasonics. The GX1 (I think this is the model) has interchangeable lenses but is considerably smaller than my DSLR. Much easier to take when I don't feel like hauling a load.

And I have an LX3 which is an amazing little compact cam. Wide angle lens, fast glass, top quality output. The current model in even better.

My DSLR gear is Canon. But I went with Pana for the compact cameras because I really liked the quality of the gear and the photos.

Another vote for Panasonic compacts, but I've used the ones with no interchangeable lenses (various models). I like that they have an excellent image stabiliser, good picture clarity and generally quite a good zoom. Some good scene modes to make shooting things like waterfalls, sunsets, portraits easy if you don't want to think too much about it.

I must admit that my phone has become my basic point and shoot camera now though, it's quite small and I have it with me anyway... I have an HTC One X and sometimes use some photography apps - Camera ZOOM FX, After Focus, Photoshop Express etc.

I have a canon DSLR but love the sony cyber shot,it was also very cheap to replace when it was stolen from my house. I really only brought it as I loved the panarama photos I took with my old film camera when I was on holiday. This has taken good shots, and as I said it is cheap enough to not worry if it breaks or get water or DH throws it overboard when fishing. I did look into the panasonic though, if we were not on the water so much I would probably have gone for one of those.

I love my Canon Powershot S95 (the model before this one). Point and shoot, great small size, and enough "user input" options to vary the aperture/shutter speed etc.
