Hi everyone

I want to buy a new laptop but not sure what to buy... I'm hoping someone can advise me because I have no idea about these things!

I want something lightweight as I drag it around for work but not with a tiny screen as I need to work off it for hours on end and don't want to have awful posture or eyesight. Prefer windows to Mac but can be convinced otherwise..

I have an iPad and Dell laptop now. iPad is ok for Email, Internet, movies etc but I don't have a keyboard for it and the lack of usb annoys me. The Dell is fine except it is too heavy!

Advice please? Suggestions?

I would start by working out what screen size you want, then working out if you need an optical drive, then budget. the websites for officeworks, bing lee, d*ck Smith & JB Hi go would be my starting points. You would need to go and actually look at them re screen size and keyboards.

I agree with qak, once you have worked out screen size, you can then see what the memory is like, etc and go from there.

I have a 13" MacBook and its great for screen size. My DD has a HP 15" but it's heavy and it's way too big for me.

Oh and I just wanted to say that you can make the text bigger on a smaller screen. I use 110% on my MacBook as some text in some web sites are hard to see...well for me anyway. Those web sites that have normal text size I have it set to 100%

Trying them out, as in size, weight, colour, memory etc is the best way. I also do a lot of research on reviews before I buy anything. Everything I have bought has lived up to the standards of what other people honestly say about each item.

Lenovo, toshiba, hp are a good start. Dells are too heavy I agree.

Just make a list of everything you need on the laptop, eg windows, Microsoft office, wireless, camera, intel 7, what ram, etc etc etc. so you can compare apples with apples..

Personally I wouldn't spend over 1k on a computer that's only going to last a couple of years anyway. Having said that my last brick of a dell lasted about 7 years with only a few keys missing and a fan that stopped working.

For lightweight and traveling with , you can't beat an ultrabook with a solid state drive - The Asus Zenbooks are good and they have a site where they sell the reconditioned ones with full manufacturers warranty, so you can save a fair bit there . They are mostly ones that didn't work out of the box and needed a part replaced etc so still basically brand new.
Logical Blue One are selling Horize Clevo ultra books and they are very cheap for their specs $799, were expecting ours to arrive today but it may be a bit overkill for what you need one for. Defiantly try to get the solid state drive tho , faster and less likely to bugger up from using on the go.
Really anything they sell currently is going to be ok for word processing , internet browsing, work etc you really only need the top of the line for gaming

Thanks so much for the comments! Once I google half the terms you've used then I will do some searching. I'm hopeless!

My current one is 15 inch screen but good idea about increasing text size! Honestly, I don't apply much common sense to these issues.

We have bought 3 Asus now, and have been really happy with them. Must check out the reconditioned ones, as I want one of my own for Christmas.
