So DS (10 months) is pretty inconsistent with the afternoon nap and I’m wondering if it’s time to try one nap a day? Is it too early? Any other babies out there go to 1 nap early?

He goes down easy peasy at 9/9.30 and sleeps anywhere from 1.5 – 2.5 hours. The afternoon nap isn’t so easy. He either takes 40 mins to fall asleep with a few resettle visits from me, or he gets really upset and I end up rocking him to sleep. Sometimes if rocking doesn’t fit in with my schedule (or DD's) i just get him up and he goes without the afternoon nap. He lasts until 7pm without getting too upset.

Life would be easier if there was only one nap, and DD could have quiet time at the same time. But I don’t want to push him for the wrong reasons. He starts child care in Jan and he may need more sleep then? It’s such a guessing game!

I could try waking him after 45-60 mins in the morning??

(He is getting 11.5 hours at night and sleeps through now.)

Appreciate any advice biggrin.gif

What time of the day are you trying to put him down?

Is he showing tired signs or are you just sticking to a time?

My son's day sleeps changed around 10 months he still has two sleeps a day & From what I've read it's too early to drop the 2nd nap, they should be getting around 15 hr sleep in total ( night & day).

So now his naps are at 8.30 till 10 & then again at 1 till 3, bed at 6.45.

Often if he's not tired or doesn't sleep for the full 2 hrs in the afternoon I take him for a walk in his pram & he'll really relax and often have a quick 30 min nap afterwards, maybe try the pram for your arvo nap.

I'd also look at shortening his morning nap to no more than 1.5 hrs.

Follow his tired cues. Also do you have a pre sleep routine during the day, we read for 15 mins before each nap, this way he knows it's nap time.

Good luck.

Not too early at all. DD (nearly 1!) went to 1 nap at 10 months.and if the baby is sleeping through the night I think it's fine.

My DS sounds just the same as yours.

We went to one nap at 10 months, and it worked out just fine. It was a relief to stop the afternoon struggle, and over time he had his morning nap later and later, so it's now the afternoon nap.

He's now 18 months and trying to go from 1 nap to zero. Not so great.

He is such a happy little chappie, he doesn't show tired signs generally. I usually try put him down at 2pm ish so that he's been awake for 3 hours.

My DD dropped to one sleep at 9 months. She is/ was a great night sleeper and would sleep 12 hours solid overnight. She went from having a morning and an afternoon nap to a nap on the middle of the day after lunch.it just kind of happened as she was taking longer and longer to go to sleep in the morning that there simply was no time to have an afternoon nap. Follow your baby's cues and you will be fine.

If he's not tired and still happy then I wouldn't worry about it too much. As others have said some drop it early, as long as they are getting that solid sleep at night.
It's up to you, my neighbours son ( 11 months) has a 40 minute nap in the morning around 9, then a long sleep at 12 for 2 or 3 hrs, maybe something like that might work for him?
Agree follow baby's cues :-)

My DD went to one nap a bit before then (8 months I think). She slept through better after that too!
At daycare all the kids older than one only have one nap after lunch anyway.

My DD1 dropped to one nap around then. Worked for us, she got more sleep overall once she moved to a single nap.

FWIW, I think it was just a stage. We did trial one nap and it went well, but since then his crawling skills went up a level. Now he's sooo much more mobile, and he's pulling himself up to standing too (eeek). He's not fighting the 2nd sleep any more... he's so tired he really needs 2 naps at the moment.

Just thought I'd update for anyone who has a similar issue.
