My mum has it. Since being diagnosed she finally doesn't have the runs for the first time in 35 years (Sorry TMI).

I was surprised at what is on the allowed and not allowed lists. Some fruit is ok but others are big no no's and onions and garlic are out. But she can basically have as much meat and vegies as she likes.

yes my daughter had it - it's also known as "toddler diahorrea". My daughter had other intolerances aswell which exacerbated it (dairy and soy protien).

How bad is the intolerance? I think there are varying degrees of the illness. My DD was strictly off fruit and juice, which difficult with her unable to consumed milk or soy products either.

ETA we also had to increase her fat intake due to malabsorption from the fructose intolerance.

well thing is she does not have diaarhoea at all. she is the opposite.poo's pellets
but i am trying to get to the bottom of what is bothering her. i thoght all along it was dairy so cut it out but still was bothered. my sisters 5 yr ol dhas just gone on a gluten free diet so i thought what the heck i'll try that and major change in sleep (only woke once as compared to every couple hours stretching and curling up in pain). she had also been consuming dairy again for months and months. her behaviour even changed. but even though we are so strict she occassionally has nights like before and i can't figure out why. i think i need to keep a food diary

Yep I have this!! Most people look at me like im nuts when I say i cant eat fruit.. after years of being told I had IBS its just turned out to be fruit.

I hate it though, as I love fruit. The only time i can consume fruit is when I am pg because well pg blocks me up and fruit doesnt.... my own personal laxitive

Sweet fruits like rock fruits are the big ones i have to avoid.. a small apple is ok for me

try a paediatric dietician, paediatrician or your GP to get ot he bottom of it then?

It's important for children to consume gluten so that they can effectively absorb nutrients - unless of course they have celiac disease. wink.gif

There are so many varying health factors that need to be considered when restricting a child's diet that it's good to get some guidance whilst your working it out.

My DD has already been diagnosed gluten, dairy and soy intolerant but was still getting diarrhea. It felt like we were missing something until her gp suggested not giving her apple while she was really bad and it all clicked.
The day we stopped all high fructose fruits & veg she was no longer bloated and no diarrhea. It was an amazing difference!
We then started her soy challenge and she's back to diarrhea.....and we are back to the allergist for some advice on the fructose.
I wouldn't be playing around with a 2 year olds diet too much without the guidance of an allergist and dietician, there is so much that needs to be taking into account. Also you should never take a child off gluten without getting coeliac testing done first, just in case. It's too hard putting them back on later if there has been an improvement and they need to be tested, we face this next year as DD has never been able to tolerate it.
What vegetables is everyone avoiding, I've only read about onion & garlic but my sil thinks there's more.

Fructose intolerance is more than just cutting out fruit - and some fruits are allowed, it's not straight forward. I agree with the PPs who have suggested getting the advice of a dietitian before cutting out major food groups from a toddler's diet.

Just to give you an example of some parts of the fructose free diet that might not be obvious:

Usually causes problems:
-Apples
-Onions
-Stone fruits
-Orange/pineapple juice
-Snow peas (a vegetable!)
-Artificial sweetener (sorbitol - this is like poison for the fructose intolerant!)

Usually not a problem:
-Bananas (yes, a fruit)
-Berries (yes, a fruit)
-Carrot
-Rice
etc

Tolerated by some, not by others:
-Small amounts of garlic
-A small piece of orange
-Gluten

This is not an exhaustive list, I'm just trying to give you the idea that the whole thing is complicated, and the level of intolerance varies from person to person. Please seek specialist advice.

Are there certain fruits you find make her worse or set off symptoms? Maybe also look into salicylates & amines. The book "friendly food" is amazing.
