I just realised last financial year I didn't claim our medical expenses which came to over $2000. Am i able to claim them the following financial year?Thanks

I'm not sure about doing them next year, but I do know that you can lodge an ammendment for this year.

Nope - they must be claimed in the year they were incurred. You can however lodge an amendment - you've actually got 2 years to do it in.

Don't forget 2012's limit is actually $2,060.

You only get 20% of whats over $2000 or something like that, so it might not be much anyway.

If you go through a tax agent, the cost to amend it might be the same as the extra refund...

Can't believe I was so silly. I just found the receipts under a file I must have gotten them out to take with me to the accountant but left them on my desk and over time have put files on top of them. The total medical expenses came to $12 000.

You will need to prepare an amendment.

Your accountant can help you, or you can look at the instructions on the ato website for how to request an amendment.
