I think it's *supposed* to be complimentary to say it to a man about his (female) partner, but I think it's creepy.

I think between two men who are friends it's a joke between the two of them and a compliment to you.

No my DH wouldn't be offended, nor would I.

I might say this about people, but I would never say it to either member of the couple unless I didn't mind making them feel sad and uncomfortable. It's funny - I kind of get it between men though I do still see it as a put down for the man, but there is no way in hell I'd expect a female friend to laugh if I told her she was punching above her weight.

If someone said it to DH about me he would probably say something like 'Hell yeah, I got a good one' (in a joking way).
If someone said it to me I would be a little offended.

I have been around people saying that to DH when he first introduced them to me. It is meant as a compliment but I can see how it could be offensive to some. DH always thought it was funny and agreed with them as he thought the same way. If he was insecure then I think it would have felt they were being mean to him and make him feel worse, luckily he isn't like that but people should probably keep opinions like that to themselves

Not overweight punching above your weight as in your partner is better looking then you are handsome or vice versa
