My DS 2yo has suffered from chronic constipation pretty much forever and has been on a low dose of laxative (lactalose atm) everyday for close to a year, I can't remember exactly when we started.
The last few months he has been improving and was finally having a bowel movement almost everyday(with laxative), this improvement has coincided with us removing a heap of processed food but not so much a diet change we just make our own of everything. Our paed asked us to go dairy free to try and see if its a CMP intolerance so we have been dairy free for almost 3 weeks. He was still going everyday but I have realised tha we can't actually tell if its making a difference without removing the laxative so we have done that and he is still pooing (1 week). His poo though is foul smelling (more then usual) and liquidy (about the same he doesn't have formed poos often) and is making his bum red (not usual). He farts and burps all the time more than usual and he has always been windy, he is breaking wind every 15 mins all day and night and it smells so bad I want to vomit. Is this a normal reaction from changing from dairy to soy? and might calm down a bit after his body is more used to it? Could he be soy intolerant? We are thinking about maybe another week off the dairy and the laxative and then giving him some dairy to see if he becomes constipated again is that long enough or do we need to stay dairy free longer? Any advice is welcome |

How is he going OP?
A little different, but my breastfed baby gets foul smelling green poo that burns her bum when I eat soy. She's dairy intolerant also. Apparently it's quite common for people with dairy intolerances/allergies to also have issues with soy. Could you try rice/oat/almond milk for a bit perhaps? |

2.5yo DS was the same and had a CMP allergy. When we switched him to soy we also discovered he was allergic to that as well. (similar symptoms as you have described and was later confirmed by a specialist).
We switched to almond milk and haven't had a problem |

It sounds as if soy could actually be the problem. Soy is in soooo many processed foods, so this could be why eliminating those helped.
I would try removing soy and seeing if that is it. It could turn out that dairy is fine. |

I was going to suggest almond milk same as PP, it is fairly expensive but if you happen to have a Thermomix you can make it yourself quite frugally.

My DD reacted badly to regular formula and our Paed put her on soy formula - that was even worse! She's on lactose free now and is perfectly fine.
My whole family is lactose intolerant, we love almond milk though. The blue diamond brand at Coles isn't that expensive. |

I find that my son does best with goats milk and his eczema breaks out with cows milk... but he's fine with normal dairy (cheese/yoghurt) otherwise.

My kids love the oat milk, will happily have that over anything else.

Thanks for the replies.
We decided to put him back on dairy for the moment, we figured its going to be difficult to keep him strictly dairy/soy/everything else free with all the christmas events so we would just take a break see how he goes without the laxative and tackle it all more systematically after christmas. Ubermum you might be right and I think we might have a go at soy free after christmas depending on how he goes. I posted a while ago about MSG and I still think that might be an issue, but I'm guessing its going to take a while to sort it all out. |
