I'm a red head and have always had trouble with lipstick colour. Corals and melons seem to be good. Perhaps do a google image search on redheads that have a similar hair colour and see what they are wearing.

I wear bright gold, russet and brown. I once had a maroonie colour but I have never found it again. I have natural hair though so I am not sure if gold would come across as too full on with the pinkie undertones of henna rather than the brownie orangie undertones of my hair.

Bright red works for me (I know you don't like bright, but you can work up to it by using gloss or softer lipsticks with less pigment - Revlon lip butter is a really good one). Yellow-based reds work better with copper hair in my experience.
Chocolatey browns with reddish underlying tones also work, as can orangey shades - Tango by Australis was really good on me, and there was a brown ck one that looked nice too. |

I have copper red highlights in my hair ( both natural and bottle ).
I have just purchased some clinique butter shine lipsticks. The Tawny/ coral colours did well for me. Apple brandy and cranberry cream http://www.clinique.com.au/product/1605/50...tick/index.tmpl |

I am a strawberry blonde and it has taken me ages to find the right shade for me. And just when I find it, it gets discontinued!
Anyway, I find browny reds, bronzes and those with yellow/orange undertones are best. I steer clear of all pinks and anything with pink undertones. I wear Butterscotch by Nutrimetics. |

I'm a bright orange / red head (faux!) and my favourite colour is a Mac corally red (Lady Danger).
Christina Hendricks (my red head idol!) actually seems to wear quite a lot of pink shades, though they tend to be fairly close to a natural lip colour. She also wears a lot of bright red. |
