Well I went into the shops today and had a quick look. From what I could see most of them had the sticker so I dont know what that guy was talking about to be honest.
I thinking by 'toys' he meant like toys compared to the quality of helmets in his shop (not literally toys). Either way I think this myth has been busted for now biggrin.gif Im very glad to say happy.gif

Another thread got me thinking..

Did you know that the bike helmets they sell in places like Big W, Kmart, etc are actually classed as 'Toys'.

I actually found this out when I went to the local bike shop to purchase my son a helmet and after a lovely chat with the owner he told me this.

I was horrified that that shops are aloud to sell helmets that are not proper helmets. If I hadnt spoken to him, I would have never known.

It makes me shudder to think of all the parents thinking they are doing the right thing by buying a helmet that is actually not fit for the purpose it is sold as intended.

Feel free to share anything else you may have discovered that you'd like people to be aware of original.gif

I thought they had to meet standards if they display the sticker.

Pretty sure that's his way of making sure you go back there to buy your next helmet. DH works in OHS and will not allow DS1 to have a skateboarding helmet for bike-riding, but is perfectly happy to buy cycle helmets from the Toy department in Kmart or Toys R Us. Bikes are also sold in the Toy department - doesn't make them not bicycles.

I buy from Kmart and they have a little sticker saying they meet Australian standards.
I assumed that meant they were safe.
Are you sure the guy wasn't trying To scare you into always buying from him.

I just had a look online, and most of the ones bigw sells comply with AS/NZS 2063: 2008 the Australian helmet standard (which makes them an approved bicycle helmet (I think the rules are the same in most states).

Are you sure he wasn't just trying to sell you an expensive helmet?

Cobwebs are the new black!
All bicycle helmets in Australia must comply to safety standards- including ones sold in Toy stores. If not they will be subjected to large fines:

Not so?
I bought a Tinkerbelle and a Thomas helmet to go with my grandchildren's bikes for Christmas and they are both Australian Standards approved.

No I didnt know, coz its a load of BS!
Sounds like he just wanted to get your business.
Helmets bought online frmo overseas do not comply with Aus standards and therefore dont have the sticker (does not make them less "safe" though) but means you legally cant ride on the road with one.
