I volunteered to the be the webmaster of a community group I'm involved in. I have no programming experience, but imagined I'd get more help than I am from the outgoing webmaster. I really want to be able to do this, both to learn a new skill and to be more actively involved in the group. After 2 nights of trying to get my head around things such as linux, cpanel, backends, and CSS & html, I fear I've bitten off more than I can chew. Is there a dummies guide to this stuff somewhere?

Thanks RunawayPrincess. I had googled some diy links, but had no idea what I was looking at.

Question for anyone who might be able to help...the website is in wordpress and I log in to cpanel to drive it. I've used wix.com before to create a site for uni, why not use something similar for this group? Surely it would be easier to hand over to successors?

Wordpress is a pretty user-friendly type of site that most community groups use - I'd consider sticking with it...

Op, not sure why you're logging into cpanel to manage the site? Wordpress has its own management interface (usually accessible via http://domainname.com/wp-admin/ from here you can edit content etc. Cpanel is used for managing the hosting of the site.

From the sounds of your last post perhaps you don't have these logins? Sorry if I've misunderstood. Also google Wordpress user guide PDF. There are a couple of instructional PDFs out there that are quite user friendly.

It sounds like you've bitten off more than you can chew ;-P However wordpress is very easy to understand and use. And there is plenty of support at the main wordpress sites on how to use it. I suggest finding a great template, and working from there. HOWEVER there are technical sides to all websites as well and all the background work I do have a tech team on board to do that side of things. It is one thing to know how to operate software; but another to learn the programming side of things and technical setup.
