So I've finally convinced DH that we need to crate train Bickie. Yay. But I have a few very basic questions.

Firstly, I want a wire crate as she's a chewer. What is the best size for a Labrador puppy and where is the best place to get a sturdy wire crate from for a reasonable price?

Secondly, can I move the crate from inside to on the deck and then inside again or is that too confusing for her?

I got mine from Petbarn, which is the local pet stockist (Canberra Region). I bought one that would accommodate a fully grown Labrador (65cm x 74cm x 107cm), because they grow so quickly and I didn't want to have to replace it. Pics of her are in the stickied thread at the top.

You can get them online through various pet supply stockists, so let google help you out there.

Best things about crates is they can go anywhere and everywhere. So yes to the indoor and outdoor use - and also for travelling.

I got a very sturdy one from our local pet store but it wasn't cheap. It was about the same size Spikey mentions, and it holds a full grown 21 inch Aussie Shepherd with enough room to lay down and sleep comfortably stretched out.

We used it as a "den" for our dogs when they were puppies and now we use it when one of the girls is in season......the boy gets to sleep in it. other than that we don't really use crates at home, although I use a trolley and a secura pen at dog shows.

My suggestion would be to get one with a metal tray in the base, not plastic (or you won't have a base for long) and buy a size for an adult, not a puppy.

Ebay is fine, or if you're near somewhere that regularly holds dog shows, the vendors there have them and they are often surprisingly reasonably priced. And you can try your dog in them for size.

I got my first wire crate from ebay. Was pretty cheap..
I had to buy the bigger one for a full grown goldy but she is small for her size.
They both have canvas ones now and I move them on them all the time lol. They are fine and find them pretty quick.

I'm planning on getting a wire one soon for a couple of reasons.

1. Eventually we will have a puppy (probably GSD)
2. I need something to transport all 5 cats in at once for when we move hopefully next year

I am going to go the XXL crate (48") because Bandit is so TALL and long and I want him to be able to comfortably sleep in it because he's outgrown the 42" soft crate. Though we don't really crate Elly at night anymore, she is an awesome dog who doesn't wander, she just sleeps next to my side of the bed and doesn't move until I get up.

There are XXL crates on ebay or even the cheaper online stores (deals direct, crazy sales, oo.com.au, top buy etc) for around $70.
