my workplace was robbed a few weeks ago. The thief broke in and stole a small safe. Last night he came back. we assume to steal the replacement safe, which we haven't yet bought thank goodness.
my question to those who have experienced a robbery. Did the robbers come back a second or third time? A few people i know have said they just replaced everything when the thieves came back and took all the new stuff. Im curious how common this type of second robbery is.

This happened to my sister. She was robbed twice in a fortnight. They then recovered some of her things about six months later and the items taken from both robberies were found together so it was quite clearly the same person!

I was robbed twice in 6 weeks... The police said its very common. The thieves wait until people collect insurance and replace stolen goods...

I have known soooo many people that have been robbed a second time - it's taught me a great lesson on waiting for replacement items.
Putting jewellery at the bottom of your dirty linen basket doesn't cut it either - they sweep these places with a metal detector.
Dogs are a good deterrent.

my MILs place has been broken into 11 times in the last 6 years thankfully she has this kickarse security system now so the last 4 or so times they havent been sucsessful!

I have had issues with this. I think the subsequent robberies are partly because they think you might replace your stuff and partly because they know their way around.

Yep, have had the same issue here...

We have been robbed 5 times and 2 attempts in the last 8 years. Several of the robberies or attempts were very close together, within a matter of weeks, we assumed (as did the police) that it was the same people waiting to get their hands on the replaced items...

Not sure about the other times..

It's a horrible feeling though... We got a dog after the last robbery, and not long after I came home (to check on the house before collecting my DS from school care, to try and "protect" him from any more upset) and looked in the backyard only to see a security screen lying on the grass ( after 2 robberies a few weeks apart). I panicked and called my husband, who left work straight away, and then called 000, as the dog was barking, and I thought there might have been someone around...

My DH got home before the police turned up, and STORMED into the house, only to discover that our new "security system" - the dog, had somehow gotten the security screen that the police fingerprinted off the table and had played with it.... Was very embarrassing having to call 000 again to explain that we didn't need them...

But I still get very anxious coming home some days from work, or if we have been away for a couple of days, to see that our house is still as we left it...

We are going away at Christmas, but my MIL or SIL will be coming over once or twice a day to feed our dog and cats, so hopefully there will be enough activity to deter any problems...

My sister used to work in forensics for the police - yes it is VERY common!

When we got robbed I didn't sleep properly again for nearly a year. I still, when we go away, leave a note on the kitchen bench that says:

"We've already been robbed, there is nothing left. Can you please leave us alone?"

I hate scumbag thieves, and I really don't give a flying fart about all the 'sad personal issues' that cause them to do it.

(Sorry - still bitter! The b*st*rd who robbed us - and dozens of other homes in the area actually got caught, but he got off any gaol time because he has a 'mental illness', and it was 'out of character'(??) last time I checked being a drug dealer, drug addict and a career criminal doesn't count as a mental illness!)

When we moved into our first house together we were robbed twice in 3 months. I'm sure they just waited for us to replace the stuff on insurance (which we'd only just taken out 2 weeks before the first robbery!) and struck again. We moved ASAP, we've thankfully never been broken into since.

My parents and neighbours were broken into, and then the person did come back about six weeks later but my parents were more careful with keeping everything locked and the person only robbed the neighbours. Then a year later a father and son were arrested for robberies in the area, I have no idea if they were the ones involved in my parents but since then there has been noproblems. the father was 68 and sentenced to ten years jail and the son sentenced for 6 years.
