I was thinking about this the other day. I'm not a teacher, but being a parent, I find EB to be a wealth of information (some good and some.... er... well.... ).

I was wondering if there are forums for teachers? Anyone know? When you have a teaching issue that you may not necessarily be able to talk to your own colleagues about, what do you do?

I used to go on this one quite a bit: http://forums.atozteacherstuff.com/ I don't know of any very active Australian forums; most of them are just ads for overseas jobs.

Thanks Lyn, I was wondering if they existed. I've seen such amazing parenting support on here at various times, made me think about people in certain professions and if they have equivalent outlets and support. Its always interesting to see teachers put their input into the threads here too

The outlets and support are not in the form of online communities, but they do exist.

The thing is with parenting, you can get a bit isolated at home doing your thing with your kid ... just you and the baby ... you need a social outlet and EB fulfils it nicely.

When you are working as a teacher you are usually working with a colleague or 2 from whom you can seek support etc. Education Departments also have counselling and support services and a lot of discussion and so forth can be had at Training Sessions. I have found the ones run by the AEU have been excellent for this. There are also expert teachers who inform us of 'what's going on' or other relevant information.

Online support discussions between teachers could be a little ... stilted. We obviously can't give out too many details.

It sometimes takes me ages to craft a response in a teacher thread, as I don't want to be too specific and give out too many identifying details!

There are some online forums to share resources though.

In Queensland, there are a number of discussion lists you can belong which can be helpful. I belong to a P-3 discussion list and many people share resources, planning or just offer advice about topics.

I'm a teacher, and I've been on the constant look-out for a forum for teacher stuff but haven't had much luck. When I first started teaching I really thought it would be a good idea to get tips/advice but most of the forums I joined ended up being incredibly inactive OR too American/British to relate to the Australian education system! So if anyone finds one... let me know

ETA: Thankfully my colleagues are very open and supportive, so if I have a teaching issue I usually talk to them about it But if I really can't, there are lots of supportive outlets... such as the union, if you are a member. Not really any public internet forums, though.
