Hi,

Just hoping an expert may be able to clear something up for me. What is a registered breeder (talking about cats in particular).

My sister is looking a Maine coon kittens, I too have a Maine coon. She believes that providing she goes to a registered breeder the kitten is a pure bred. I believe that ANYONE can be a registered breeder and only pedigree papers and registration with one of the cat council places means a kitten is a pure bred.

Can't you be a registered breeder of moggies even? Don't you just have to register with the local council and you are a registered breeder?

Someone who knows more than us help!! Just hate for her to pay $1000 for this kitten and it is not a pure Maine coon, is doesn't "look" pure to me....

Registered breeders are usually registered with a cat/dog club that operates a stud book and keeps records of bloodlines, births etc. Maine Coon might be too small a breed for a Victorian club, but there is probably a Maine Coon club of Australia.

A recognised breeder is someone recognised by a local council to be breeding animals, and they don't necessarily have to be pedigree- eg, all your "oodles".

You need to buy from someone that is going to be able to provide pedigree papers with your animal.

Registered breeders will be registered with a state affilicate of either the Australian Cat Federation or the Co-ordinating Cat Council of Australia. They may also be registered with ANCATS but not all other registries within Australia will recognise them. You can check out their breeder listings to see if yours is there.

A pedigree cat is not sold without papers - it is the birthrite of the kitten. Registered breeders do not use the term "purebred' because a lot of BYBs and unregistered breeders have co-opted that term - we use the term "Pedigree" or "Pedigree with papers".

Just because someone is a registered breeder doesn't mean that their cats are champion lines - if the kitten doesn't have the look you want, check around with other breeders. There is no point getting a pedigree cat for a certain look if the kiten you are choosing doesn't meet that look.

The code of ethics with binds registered breeders means they can only sell pedigree animals with papers. However that doesn't stop some people breaking the rules but generally you will be safe.

I have a Maine Coon cat, she's 7 years old. Her breeder is one of the most successful in the country, and I"m pretty sure she's a member of some sort of Maine Coon Club (as well as a member of the governing feline councils in Victoria). She had bred, exhibited and sold Maine Coons for as long as they've been a recognised breed in Australia.

I'm a registered breeder of dogs, although I'm yet to breed a litter. Being a registered breeder means being a member of the governing canine council, adhering to their code of ethics, applying for a breeder prefix and passing the relevant exam.
