My 12yo is terrified. I have explained everything the best way I can, but he is still walking around with stomach cramps.

All the ridiculous doomsayers make me so angry. My innocent son does not understand or deserve this.

I don't know how to make this better!

What a load of rubbish. sad.gif

I feel for you. My 9 year olds aren't terrified, but they do keep asking if the world really will end tomorrow and are obviously concerned. Roll on the 22nd.

no both my 11 and 12yr old know its a load of rubbish. We have talked about it and we have explained that its something that some people believe - like Santa and God.

As long as no one is trying to force us to believe the same then they arent hurting anyone.

I think I start by asking him why he believes these other people over you?

Does he believe in Santa / God / Tooth fairy? maybe you can use that draw parallels.

Cobwebs are the new black!
My kids don't know about it.

Is there something in the world that is said to be true but isn't that you could use as an example as to why we have no reason to believe this is true? Or tell them just how many end of World predictions there have been (well into the millions) and this is just as fake as the rest.

He says he doesn't believe it! But there's that nagging doubt that he could be wrong..and therein lies the problem.

It is awful to see him so knotted up. Not fair.

oh bugger, you have a deep thinker.

So hard for them when they try and get their head around complex issues such as this (belief and faith), when their life experience is still so young.

Poor kid.

I told my kids when they asked - that since I was a kid there have been hundreds of times people have predicted the end of the world. And yet here we are.

In years gone by though we didn't have the Internet which makes all this stuff so full on and global which builds the hysteria as everyone is talking about it which gives it a weight and reinforces the belief.

And what was Gillard thinking making that 'humourous' video? Doesn't she realise children really look up to Prime Minister of Austalia as an important and trustworthy figure?

Poor little guy - I remember there was a big 'end of the world' drama when I was 12 as well... I was petrified that I wouldn't wake up in the morning. unsure.gif
Here is a link to the NASA explanation of why it won't happen
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html, sorry on my iPad and can't get the link post to work.
