So I have a Canon EOS 600D (Christmas present...and very excited) but I have no idea where to start. I need to learn about photography from the very basics as I have only ever used point and shoot cameras. I have had a look online at courses, tutorials, etc but it is quite overwhelming.

How did you start?
What courses or tutorials would you recommend?
Any tips?

Best place to start is by reading the cameras little manual book it comes with just to gets some basics. Then just go and take pics of anything you like . Most the time its trial and error .

....although I can highly recommend reading the Manual & working out how to set it to "Fully Automatic" - that way you can start taking great photos while working out all the technical stuff.

It should have different modes where you can set the Aperture, or Speed, or white balance yourself - that way it takes care of some things while letting you adjust the others.... Beyond Snapshots is really helpful for walking you through all this stuff, but you still have to Read the Manual

I got the details of a camera course for DP (Chrissie pressie) from a local camera store.

A course could be a really good idea - it depends on your learning style if you'd prefer a classroom based or practical (out & about) course. You could start with a half-day practical and take it from there. Also consider if you want practical (i.e. exposure, settings, what your camera can do) or composition type course or both.

Capital cities and some larger towns have camera clubs you can join.
