Our DD and DS (twins) will be 4.5 years when they commence Prep (non compulsory FYOS in Qld). Although that won't be for a few more years!

In Qld the age grouping is based on financial year; i.e. 30 June is the cut off and our two were born on 22 June making them the youngest in the grade. So, the age range for Prep on day 1 is 4.5 yrs to 5.5 yrs. Someone has to be the youngest I guess.

In Qld it is very unusual to keep kids back and a significant reason is needed with permission sort. I actually don't think I know anyone who has kept their kids back!

We have the added difficult in that I would be very hesitant in keeping only one child back. I think this would be very challenging for our duo's relationship. Hopefully they will both be ready to go when it's their turn.

ETA - Children need to be five by 30 June in the year they enrol in Prep in Qld.

My son will be 5+3.

We are in NSW, where FYOS is called kindergarten. For state schools, you can start as long as you turn 5 by July 31, 2013.

Private schools often have a tighter cut off -- our school has an April 30th, 2013 cut off for turning 5.

If a child younger than that wants to start school, they'd have to formally apply for early entry.

My DD will be 4 y 8 months in Vic. She is being early entered, if she went when she was supposed to she would be going at 5y 8m next year. Cutoff is April and her birthday is June so she only missed by about 6 weeks.
