I've started getting a little rash when I shave and thought that waxing might be a better option. I would do this myself rather than going to a beautician (do my own bikini line so I could manage this).

What I'm worried about is that I've heard it's agonising and you can get big welts and so on. Perhaps this was just for the one unfortunate person who told me this?

Anyone done/do it? Do you get ingrown hairs? Recommend it or not?

I have only had it done twice (by beautician) it is painful but bearable. I prefer to shave as I hate waiting for the hair to be long enough to wax.

It sounds agonising. I had laser done and that is tolerable, with no lasting pain! I made the mistake of using depilatory cream one memorable NYE (funnily enough!)

I have a pretty high pain threshold and don't feel any other area I wax painful. Underarms I did once, never again. Awful and not worth a repeat for me.

I started doing mine when DH and I got engaged in 2001. Now I don't have to do anything to them (and haven't for a few years)

If you can do your bikini line then you should be fine with your armpits. I think it sometimes depends on the wax you use as some people do have reactions to products. I always make sure I have the soothing cream to put on afterwards (for bikini line too) which helps with redness.

I can pay beautician no problems, do it myself and I end up with welts and huge bruises.

Never had ingrown hairs, but then again I have had hem waxed since I was nearly 15. There are so few hairs now I can pluck if I am desperate.

I don't wax (too prone to ingrowns) but I used to get the rash before I used an after-shaving calming deodorant (garnier, maybe?) and now I don't anymore.

Always. I find it the least painful area to wax.

I have never found it terribly painful. But I have only had it done by a beautician.
