My family are soon planning a big move from Queensland to Victoria. I really like the area of Ferntree Gully but I was wondering about traffic to the City.

My DH will be working in Collingwood and I will be working in Box Hill. We will both drive. I'll probably be travelling around 7am and he will travel around 9am.


I was hoping someone would be able to let me know what the travel time is like.

Ferntree gully to Box Hill at 7am might be 30 minutes. Ferntree Gully to the city at 9am.....I don't even want to think about it. So much traffic standing still! I don't mind a long commute, but like to be moving most of the way.

I live in the foothills of the Dandening Ranges (I.e. Ferntree Gully area) and I love it! However my partner and I don't work in the city So neither of us have to deal with the traffic!

Box Hill at about 7am will be fine - about half an hour.

Travelling to the city from Ferntree Gully at around 9am would be a nightmare - I'm not going to lie! Having said that though, all traffic in Melbourne going towards the city in peak hour is a nightmare - especially coming from the East as the Monash freeway is always bumper-to-bumper with major delays!

Wherever you choose to move to in the general vicinity of those suburbs, you will have traffic issues - there is always so much standstill traffic at that time of the morning in Melbourne. Because Ferntree Gully is a little further out from the city, it will add time to your commute, but in terms of standstill traffic you won't have THAT much luck in any other eastern suburb I'm afraid! Gotta love Melbourne's traffic :S

Yikes in terms of travelling for a 9 am start in the city from FTG.
Lots of other surburbs a bit closer in, dp commutes to the city by train from the eastern suburbs, we always stick to housing along a train line.

especially coming from the East as the Monash freeway is always bumper-to-bumper with major delays!

Head a bit more north east and you'll get Eastlink and the South-eastern freeway, I'd avoid both though at that time.

Yeah, if your partner is working in the city it might be work thinking of relocating somewhere close to a train line so that you can catch public transport. When my fiancé worked in the city, we lived in Glen Waverley right next to the train line and close to the train station. It made his daily commute so much easier!

It was only when he got a job in the outer suburbs that we decided to move to Ferntree Gully :-) If either of us worked in the city, I don't think we could do it!

That was so helpful. I think I may have under-estimated how bad the traffic in Melbourne is!

If I can ask a follow-up question, he works for himself so he can work any hours, if he drove in a 10am and back out at 7pm, what's the traffic like then?

10am to 7pm would be much better in terms of traffic. However, I am assuming you mean he starts his journey in the car at 10am as opposed to getting to work at 10am?

There would still be traffic congestion to a degree, but anything that isn't right on peak hour would be infinitely better!

If your husband's hours are flexible, maybe once you move you can experiment/try different times of the morning and routes to the city and see how it works out?
