I have always thought the fabric 'muslin' was pronounced with the 'u' us in "musk".

Recently I have heard it pronounced with the 'u' as in 'put', or like "Muslim".

Anyone know which is correct? Online dictionaries only seem to have audio pronunciations and I can't listen to those at the moment.

It's definitely the u as in 'musk' sound.

Having said that, I have heard people pronounce it similar to 'muslim', to the extent that my sister actually thought they were called 'muslim cloths' and wrote it like that on her list of things to buy baby.

I say muslin as in Muslim.

I do notice my Australian DP and friends say certain words differently to my regional British speak.

This, and I am Australian born (and as far back as I know).

I don't think I have heard anyone else say it, or I haven't paid attention.

British and American people pronounce is like muslim

It does make me giggle. 'I'd like 2 Muslims, 1 Christian, 2 Jews and I don't mind about the other 3'...

As in "musk" is the standard British pronunciation. It's a bit confusing to say "as in muslim" since that word can be pronounced differently too!
