Why? Why is it called a "like" button?

I admit I have a facebook account (talked into by adult son and daughter), however I dont use facebook and I admit, only have a sticky beak every now and then out of curiosity.

So many times I read people stating some really upsetting events in their life or doing the old woe is me and their so called friends click on the like button blink.gif

What's there to like about a family member dying or someone remembering the anniversary of their mother death for eg?

Shouldn't it be renamed the I ACK but have no comment button?

Also I have a tonne of people I wouldnt know from a bar of soap wanting to be my friend, seriously?

I honestly dont get the gist of facebook, I really dont.

I think the like button is used more as an acknowledgement button, or I agree or I like. So if it is a bad thing someone posts then someone is acknowledging that not liking in the traditional like meaning.

I agree with this. It is used in many ways.

I also have a lot of friends that share common interests and 'likes' so if I or they 'like' something it often sends me off to a page that is really interesting. Could be new art, new music etc

I love facebook. I really do. A lot depends on how you use it and how the friends you have use it.

OP, you can set yourself up to not be found either. I have done this as I dont want to be a FB user but have to be because of the kids.
