Right. Last year I asked EB whether I should try to meet people in my new home of Cairns, QLD and got a resounding "Yes!". I also got several suggestions along the lines of 'return to Melbourne', partly as the coffee is better, but also as my penchant for gay clubs is more easily fulfilled.

So, notwithstanding my regular trips down South (where I am just as happy to meet up for boot shopping, cocktails, and pretending I'm still under 30), I'd like to meet new people and maybe make a few friends in Cairns. So far, I am acquainted with a few workmates, several enormous cockroaches, and a spider called Unmentionable (due to her size - really, Queensland, who DOES spiders of that freakin size???), and I'd like to expand my horizons.

Without wanting to sound like an on-line dating agency... Here's a bit about me:

Moved to Cairns (Northern beaches) from Melbourne nearly two years ago. Am a 38 year old Mum to two (DD is nearly 2.5, DS is 4 months). Am just about to go back to work, and am counting down the minutes (I love my kids, but if I have to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar one more time my head will implode). I'm an animal loving, left wing (but not 'hippy' - a move to Kuranda is NOT on the cards), food, wine and coffee fan. I love sci fi, black humour, good books and bad movies. I speak my mind, even if the content is occasionally shallow and deranged due to sleep deprivation. My hobbies (travel, study, languages and some less savoury behaviours) have been curtailed by my delightful small children, but I do plan to return to them just as soon as the kids can legally be put in wet suits.

I'm looking to meet 'similar' people, even if just for coffee and gossiping (sadly, most of the meals DH and I consume are eaten in shifts, due to aforementioned small children). You don't have to have kids, so long as you can have a vague appreciation for why I am hysterically over tired and complaining about the lack of reputable plastic surgeons in Cairns. I come with a similarly minded DH, a new 4WD, and a wine fridge.

If anyone thinks they'd like to catch up, feel free to PM me, or add a response below.

I will occasionally 'bump' this thread up, so as to catch the eye of local people. Who knows, as Dylan Moran commented (when he played his comedy act here in 2011), "You people here in Cairns do have one or two other things you could be doing..." biggrin.gif

I would so love to have coffee with you but I'm in Brisbane.

Anytime you are down this way feel free to PM me for a catch up.

I love Dylan Moran, gossip, pretending I'm still under 30 and cocktails. I would love to meet your wine fridge.

I have two girls aged 4 and 2 who keep me tired a lot of the time.

I hope you meet some lovely people.

Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur.
Sadly, you're about 10 hours too north! Move to Mackay, it's much nicer here!

I can't move. My daughter is being entered into an arranged marriage with a work colleague's son, and I have too much invested in the beautiful grand babies they will one day make wink.gif

Geographically we match, the wine fridge sounds enticing and i think our 4WD will like each other.

I am heading overseas to another similarly hot sticky humid place oh the joys of it but when I return I would love to catch up original.gif

I enjoy pina coladas walking in the rain I actually don't mind yoga camping drinking singing wildly out of tune screaming at our poor taipans team and avoiding all creepy crawlies of any type flying or crawling. Cane toads freak me out too.

Hi!
I'm on the Northern Beaches of Cairns too. Cairns is a REALLY hard place to meet people, everyone is either transient or already in very cliquey groups!
I am 32 and have a 19 month old daughter and another on the way in May (find out what sex this Thursday!). I would be happy to catch up sometime for a coffee/playdate :-) I never seem to be able to PM people though, always get error messages!

Excellent! Contact me on your return then, and I shall arrange for you (and your family?) to be sheep dipped in disinfectant as you re-enter the country. Otherwise, enjoy your trip biggrin.gif

I just had my house sprayed for creepy crawlies today, by a pest control expert with a morbid spider phobia. When I told him about the existence, appearance and rough location of Unmentionable, he only JUST managed to walk around that side of the house to spray it.

Cairns is an odd place.

Misspip, you are right about the tyre kickers...And the people I have met so far are all originally from southern parts of Australia...

I will try to PM you - you may be able to reply to me.

Off to try...
