Hi
I have started doing a few beginner workout videos at home. I am extremely unfit so have been doing them at my own pace as I don't want to injure myself. Yesterday I did a toning video which concentrated on abs and glutes. I have woken up today very sore and I was wondering if it is better to push through and still do cardio or take the night off. Any advice would be appreciated |

Hi there
Muscle soreness is common in a new routine, change of routine or upping the intensity of a routine. Try stretching and taking magnesium (tablets or powder from the supermarket). Some light cardio won't do harm and the pain should go in 24-48 hours. Great job on getting into a fitness regime! Bec Ps - I'm a qualified Personal Trainer |

You can do cardio workouts such as walking, jogging, biking, swimming, rowing on any day, and it only takes 20-30 minutes to receive a good cardio-vascular benefit. The abdominal routines and lower back exercises are the also easiest to do and take the least amount of time -- usually five to ten minutes.

I would still do the cardio that you have planned but after warming up, take an extra few minutes to stretch the areas that are sore. Then at end of workout, do the stretches again. Youll feel better in no time. And these muscles also wont hurt next time you do this workout (or wont hurt nearly as much anyway!)
I find that if I dont do something the next day and the stretches, I feel even sorer the day after. |

That means it's working! That muscle soreness is your muscles getting stronger, which means you're getting fitter.
Personally I wouldn't work the same muscle groups if they were sore, but I would do something else like a walk. But you're not going to damage your muscles by working them again. |
