I chose a new brand of oat sachets for the kids breakfast. tipped the first one in the bowl this morning and noticed sitting on top of the oats was about a teaspoon of sugar. if that much is in plain oats what is in the cereals that are marketed to kids?

sure it wasn't oat dust, too granular and white, it showed up against the creaminess of the oats

There are sachets that are only oats but the flavoured ones would have heaps of sugar (I presume) so yes it does pay to read the labels. I have a sachet when I get to work, the Quaker (plain) is the one I find the best.

Yes, it is important to read the labels yyes.gif

DS loves eating his quick oats, but we don't buy the sachet stuff. He does get some honey on it. I figure its a more known/natural sugar and I can control the amount that goes in.

sad.gif Im always dubious about things that come in single serve sachets - the flavoured oats are really bad too.

I understand that the quick type oats are significantly higher GI than plain old rolled oats.

But you can get quick oats in a box cant you? I dont really understand what your saying actually ?? That its higher GI because it comes in a small packet (having a dumb moment obviously wacko.gif )

Stronger than ever.
Plain quick oats are rolled oats cut into smaller pieces so they cook more quickly. The home brand ones are fine actually, and cheaper. original.gif
