Not sure about wedding as mine was included in the venue, but for my birthday it was I think $700 for 5hrs.

Once she has found a DJ I would strongly recommend reading through their entire music list and crossing out all the songs she doesn't know or doesn't want played. In my case this was any form of medley, any group dance numbers (eg: Chicken Dance), as well as some other songs that I just don't like. I also gave them a list of songs that were "Must Play" songs because I love them and I know they get people up and dancing.

While this is a bit of work it did mean that our DJ played music that DH and I loved all night long.

I would ask for references for the DJ that will be playing on the night and follow them up.

It may sound like an over reaction but if you want to make sure they will actually play what you want and not what they want it's the only way you can be reasonably sure of getting the correct music.

We've used a DJ three times the first one was brilliant (he did both our wedding and a school reunion I helped to organise) the other was terrible. All three times I chose each individual song to be played (about 6 hours worth of music). The first DJ played exactly what I wanted him to. The other DJ only played the music that he liked, he didn't play any of the songs requested nor did he play anything that any of the guests liked. I was so angry that I wrote a letter of complaint to the company he worked for.
