The Preeclampsia police. Check your BP today!
I have my little "Maternal and Child Welfare Service" notebook from when I was a baby. We are talking last half of the 1960s.
Listen to these gems....

NOTE - DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. THIS INFORMATION IS VERY DATED! I AM SERIOUSLY OLD AND SOME OF MY PROBLEMS ARE PROBABLY DUE TO THIS ADVICE. roll2.gif

- at approx 3 weeks of age:
"Delrosa 5 drops in 2 tablespoons boiled water. Increase delrosa twice weekly by 5 drops until having two teaspoons in 2 tablespoons boiled water". - Delrosa was a rosehip vitamin C drink. I was actually a breastfed baby.

- at one month old:
"Vegemite size O (circle drawn on the paper) in one tablespoon boiled water. Increase vegemite gradually up to 1/4 teaspoon at 3 months"

- at 2 1/2 months:
"Cows milk 3 ounces in boiled water with 2 teaspoons sugar"

- at 3 1/2 months:
"Raw egg yolk daily. Commence with one drop and increase by one drop each day up to 1/4 teaspoon then increase by 1/2 teaspoon weekly until having whole yolk daily. No egg white."

lol - I remember Delrosa. My mum weaned my sister onto it (from BF) back in the 80's.

Fancy giving a baby vegemite water!

Pretty funny. Mum gave me a baby book from the 70s that says don't let your child suck their thumb, as it leads to masterbation...

I was grossed out by the egg yolk. I wonder what that was supposed to achieve?

My Mum tells me that she followed the nurse's advice to the letter and that vegemite water was the first food she ever gave me.

My guess would be for the vitamins, before vitamins tablets were commercially available and some people were vitamin deficient due to poor diet.

These two were in my husband's book from the early 80s. The cows milk one was written in their twice, his mum mustn't have listened the first time! I know my mum was told the raw egg yolk one, she says that was when she stopped going to the baby clinic for advice.

I am going to have to ask m Mum if I had vegemite water. I remember dunking my nieces dummy in glycerine 20 years ago. She loved it. Thankfully it didn't ruin her teeth.
