Hi, Ds is 7, will be turning 8 in two months time, he isnt keen on using a knife and fork together yet an tends to just use a fork for eating. At what age did youre Ds/Dd start using a knife and fork properly to eat with for cutting up meat, veges etc?

About 3-4yrs. Same for my older two kids. I found that after their initial interest, there were times when the challenge seemed too difficult, so some encouragement and coaching was needed (nver pushing though). DD2 is 4 and sometimes finds it a struggle and asks me to cut for her, but is mostly ok. DD1 is 6 and has been fairly independent for quite a while now. |

oh ok, Ds has never been that keen on using knife andfork and has asked for difficult things to be cut up for him, we have been encouraging him lately to try it, but he's not too keen, he seems to find it awkward somehow, as he also has with his handwriting as well, i guess he'll get there in time?

Mine were all about 4-5 years old - the girls were faster than the boys. Once they started using cutlery we stopped cutting food up. |

I can remember my mother telling the tale of her acute embarrassment when she took us back home to the old country to meet the rest of the family.
Her sister had a son about 3 months younger than I and Mum said the first time we all sat down to a meal together she noticed with horror that while I was enthusiastically shovelling my dinner into my face with my hands, my cousin was delicately using his little knife and fork. We were 2 and a 1/2! Poor Mum was considered very strict and formal in the way she was raising us back in Australia - to her family at home we were 'the wild colonial children'! |
