I am after 7 seater for family reasons. I want something as low on fuel costs as possible. I don't need something for 4 wheel driving activities - just regular driving. I do consider the environment and the impact vehicles have so as ecofriendly as possible although I'm not sure exactly what that entails. I don't want a mini van. I have a budget of up to $20,000 and so obviously looking at second hand. Please help! I have no idea about cars.

I would have suggested a 4WD but you don't seem to want that. But 7 seater without being a 4WD or minivan doesn't leave you many options...

I would look at a 2nd hand Toyota Prado in Diesel. They go forever, even with high km's and the Diesel will be more fuel efficient and cheaper to run and service.

Holden zafira - cheap as chips.
Holden captiva, they come 4 cyl, Diesel and 7 seats.
Hyundai Santa fe - same as above
SsanGyong Reston - diesel - 5 cyl 7 seats.

The bottom 3 look like 4wd, but are suv's. The top one is a mini mini van, and much older.

Citroen C4 Picasso. Around $20k second hand. Most diesel. We have had ours for three years and love it. 6/7th seats fold flat into the boot and don't take up boot space. Second row easy to fit three car seats as all seats 45cm wide (ie no slim centre seat).

Other cars to look at:

Renault Megane Grand Scenic
Peugeot 308SW (I found their boot too small and 6/7th seats take up boot space and were optional extras)

Eta the Picasso has averaged 8.4l/100kms over 60,000 Kms. It is only 1cm longer then a Mazda 3. Same length as Holden Astra. So looks big but is small.

If you can find one, a Mitsubishi Grandis.
That's what MIL has and it's an absolutely beautiful car from a passenger perspective, even the third row has plenty of leg and head room!

Market value on MIL's model is around the $18 000 mark so within your budget.

Our criteria for a new car are pretty similar to yours and we're going for a secondhand Citroen C4 Picasso. I have a friend selling one in QLD but I'm in Vic, otherwise, I'd be onto it in a flash!
