Just wondering about different peoples experiences and recovery after they had their wisdom teeth removal.
I’m getting mine taken out in few months but it is pretty complex case as my teeth are laying horizontal and very cramped so they may have to take out some bone as well (Sorry TMI). Very scared ahhh!
Anyway I’m getting them out at the clinic under sedation-any tips on recovery?
TIA

I had mine out in basic training - I was awake the whole time. I slept for two days and was allowed extra time to eat instead of the standard 10 min. meals. Soft food for awhile, loved mousse cups.

If I could have slept in my own bed without the noise of instructors screaming at people it would have been easy.

Use a towel/pillowcase on your bed that you want to throw away after, you will drool blood in your sleep.

I had mine done under "twilight sedation" at the dental clinic. I had no problems with recovery, had them out on Friday and was back at work on Monday (though could have gone Saturday if I had to). Mine were horizontal too but I had no pain from them (only getting them out prior to adult braces) and I only had the top 2. For some reason I never got my bottom wisdom teeth (not uncommon).

For me the worst part was just the noise they make as they crush them up to get them out. I had no pain during the procedure but I hadn't prepared myself for the noise which was a little unsettling.

I just had Novocaine, fully awake, no twilight, no gas. And the Novocaine didn't completely work.

Thanks for the reply. I'm getting sedated through IV aswell but apparently I will be asleep and wont remember it. So i hope I dont hear that noise because thats what I'm afraid of. Not the pain but the noises of the drills etc freaks me out! I want no memory of it biggrin.gif

I lived on room-temperature apple juice and chicken broth for about three days. My sedation failed and I swallowed a lot of blood, too, so my recovery was not great.

But, most people do fine! I just had a crap experience.

It took me about a week to recover. The first two days were the worst. Take the painkillers you are prescribed, around the clock for the first 24-48 hours. Trust me, you DO not want to pain to reach an uncomfortable level. Keep up the ice to the area for 48 hours and sleep with your head elevated to help reduce the swelling.

I had mine out in a hospital with a maxofacial surgeon & dentist because mine was also growing at a weird angle towards nerves that control certain parts of the face.

Anyhoo, it was about three days of drug haze, ice packs and sloppy food.

Then about two weeks of tenderness, I was told if you get it done in hospital under GA they really get in there hence the longer recovery time. That in a clinic under light sedation they are more gentle.

Tips

You will drool- alot
Ice blocks will be your friend, make some with just water in advance
Dissolvable (sp) panadol is gold. I would sip a little swoosh in mouth before swallowing
