Does anyone have a link that shows on a map the catchment areas for each primary school in Hobart? I hear zoning is important!

It really depends on the school. I know plenty of people who have gone to school outside their zones because often primary schools especially don't reach their maximum enrollment

i believe they are getting much stricter on which zone you are in, than in past years. have you tried the education dept site?

Really? I haven't found that but then it never really mattered much because I lived in the zone for the schools I want my kids to attend.

Thanks. I've tried the Australian schools website but just get a map with the schools on. It doesn't show the actual catchment area for each school. Or did I somehow miss that? Or would I need to contact the individual schools and ask them?

...following on... do you know if a child is guaranteed a place if moving close to a particular school (ie inside the catchment area)? We are moving to Hobart in July and just wondering where to look for a place for us. Don't really want to have to treck across town for the school run, have friends close by etc.

This year the education department cracked down on out of zone enrolments ( previously it was up to individual schools). Apparently they are allowing sibling enrolments until 2015 in out of zone schools.

I have a friend who applied for out of zone, the education department said no. I applied to the same school the previous year and we were offered a place (also out of zone).

I don't think there is a map that is clear enough to understand! It's probably worth checking with each school if there is more than one in each suburb.

As far as I am aware public schools must take you in the catchment, obvious exception is the school is at capacity and there is another school nearby.

They used to have school zone maps on the Department of Education website but it now says:
"The School Home-Area maps are currently being reviewed by the Home School Area Reference Group. If you require information about current home-areas, please contact the Learning Service of individual school.

It would be worth checking as my understanding is that the schools have to take all of the students in their zone. There are some zones that have odd borders (for example we live five minutes walk from our school but homes two streets over are zoned to a different school that is up a massive hill and would take them 15 minutes to walk to). I would ring the schools you are interested in directly.
