Me and my 3 girl friends are thinking of having our 40th's in vegas!! we have 4 1/2 years to save.
is there a good time of the year to go? where could we stay (we would want a two bedroom apartment type with kitchen) what are the things we could see? any suggestions would be great. |

Vegas is good year round, I'd avoid summer holiday and independence day long weekend.
Vegas = great shopping and cirque du soleil for me, but you can also get out to the Grand Canyon and do some fantastic hikes and walks in the area. Since your only in the early stages start with lonely planet for some basic information and work out what appeals to you. ETA- the hotel scene changes so quickly so nothing anyone recommends will be relevant in nearly 5 years, that kind of stuff I'd be researching closer to the time. We recently stayed at The Vdara, 5 star, no smoking, no casino. They have suites that overlook the Bellagio and you can take advantage of the Aria's restaurants etc.
It is in the middle of the strip and let me tell you, that is one looooong strip! Shopping is amazingly cheap, I highly recommend you get a car bc public transport isn't great. Grand Canyon is a must. We did a light plane > helicopter > boat and back again trip through Papillon and they were great, it was about $350pp for the day. Worth every penny. Book your show tickets before you get there, they sell out. Also, it's not a bad drive if you're thinking about tucking some LA time into your trip. |

As PP said Vegas is great anytime of the year. We do prefer late march, early April, great weather and accommodation, flights etc tend to be cheaper then too. Ive been 9 times and am off again in September with my family.
As to where to stay, we stay at Desert Rose Resort. A non-casino hotel located just behind MGM Grand (big casino on the Strip)It's only a few years old, extremly clean and they are 1 and 2 bedroom units with full kitchen, bathroom and lounge room. We usually pay around $70 p/night for a 1 bedroom ( which sleeps 4 comfortably) But with things changing constantly, you would have to research closer to the date. If you do end up going, you will have the BEST time. So much to do and see its fantastic! This post has been edited by PinkAce: 26/01/2013, 02:08 PM |

It can get pretty hot there so I would try and avoid summer. We went in March and the weather was perfect, their outdoor pool was even open. You can get hotel rooms pretty cheap, probably because the gambling subsidies the rooms. I have stayed at the Stratosphere and excalibur. The central part of the strip is supposed to be best although I don't know if they have apartments around there.

Go into the Miracle Mile shops at Planet Hollywood and get yourself a yard of margarita from La Salsa Cantina. They come in those long plastic 'glasses' for around $20,
The monorail can be good for getting up and down some of the strip; it's a longer walk than it looks due to the size of the casinos. |

I would not go in the middle of summer, it gets incredibly hot. March-April would be great.

We were in Vegas in Sept last year, like the other said you'll need to look at accommodation closer to the time. It was towards the end of Sept and it was still in the mid to high 30's while we were there, I would not go in summer!also check out when the huge conventions are in town, they always have them but there are some that bring in 1000's of people. Again something to look for closer to the time.
The strip is Looong! We drove and although the strip is quite busy with traffic it's pretty easy to get around and as for parking we just rocked up to a hotel and Valet parked! Cost us $2-3 in tip that's it! No one questioned us at all. Shopping is great, The North outlets are very good, but driving distance away. There is a big mall there too right on the strip, up one end which has a lot of great stores. We had kids so didn't do the night life, we went to the Grand Canyon after Vegas and if you can make it out there you will not be disappointed. Definately leave all your shopping until you hit the Premium Outlets (North) in Vegas.
Amazing deals. Ridiculously cheap. |
