Spikey, thank you for all your advice about crate training. Today's weather here in Brisbane has been awful and downright scary at times. I thought we were going to lose our roof a few times. Bickie did amazingly well. Whenever she started getting a bit nervous, I got her to do a few drills (sit, drop, stay, come etc) then popped her in her crate. She did so well - no freaking out, even when the house was shaking and water was pouring in around the door and window frames. Once in her crate, she settled and went to sleep every time (although a few times I gave her a chew treat).

I honestly don't think she would coped so well without her crate. So thank you, it made today so much easier.

crates are the bomb. Especially if you have to evacuate pets in a hurry. Not something any of us like to think of, but it can be the difference between a safe pet, and one left behind!

Glad she's so comfy in her crate, I hear you're getting some really wild stuff up there still (we had a beautiful afternoon today - nothing like yesterday, but the day is not yet over).

I have to admit, that was certainly on my mind too. Even if it just meant we could keep her safe and confined while we loaded the kids etc into the car. It was a big weight off my mind knowing that she would be safe no matter what and couldn't bolt in panic or anything.

I wanted to post this publicly so other people will read it and think "wow, even if it just helps my dog like that once, it's worth it" and decide to crate train their dogs too.

It's still very windy where I am, but much less intense. I'm fairly confident our roof will stay on now. It's certainly not all over red rover yet though.

Would love to read the advice ....I'm getting a new puppy when this storm blows over .....
the town where he is at is flooded was suppose to get him this weekend....

The advice is all public on here. . Spikey has a thread pinned at the top about crate training, plus if you search this section, there's loads of topics about it.

Seriously, it's been an awesome decision to crate train our puppy. The security and comfort it gave her and I today has been just one benefit.
