I enjoy election campaigns too, but it is odd announcing it so far in advance. I am afraid of 8 months of campaigning and no governing. I know it had to occur sometime this year but announcing the date makes the campaigning official.

I know Bob!

I am wondering if it is a strategy to make sure she holds onto the leadership as surely no one in the ALP (including KRudd) would want to challenge her during an election campaign. Plus TA might have to release some policies now…

I do to, but I'm not a fan of this idea of a 9 month election campaign.. I like the idea of the short, surprise it's an election, 5 week campaigns.

Going to a 9 month campaign, not sure that's the best move...

That's what I think - Gillard says it's so that they can get it (the announcement) out of the way and get on with the job, business as usual.
Yeah right

Oh my goodness...... I don't care if she specifically said it is not to be the longest election campaign in history..

It's going to be the longest election campaign in history!

Blergh!

I live in a marginal electorate and have a surname that is right up there at the beginning of the alphabet- this now means I'll be getting phone calls on my voting preferences for 8 bloody months!

I am wondering if it is something along these lines- maybe something is about to come up (again) that will threaten the minority government and this is a way to hold on to power as there is an upcoming election anyway.
